Personal Statement

Pursuing a career in fashion design has been a lifelong passion that has grown immensely over time. Fashion design is where my creativity finds its truest expression, where I can show my imagination, and share the narrative of my unique self through the art of clothing. It's an art form that encapsulates individuality, and my journey in this subject is all about breaking free from the ordinary to create something extraordinary.

My journey in fashion design began with a profound appreciation for uniqueness. The artist Billie Eilish lit my fuse in the world of fashion. I admired her uniqueness in fashion and her overall style. When I was 13 I started to sew small outfits inspired by Billie Eilish for my mannequins. At 14 I ventured into thrift stores, upcycling and resewing clothes to create my distinct wardrobe, as I wanted to stand out, which formed my foundation in fashion design.

When I push the boundaries of my creativity, I feel that is when my strengths shine brightest. When working on my insect project, I had to develop a concept relating anatomy to insects. Using my creativity and conceptualizing skills, I found ways to link the anatomy project to an idea I had related to insects; specifically, moths. I've also been consistent with my style to keep my identity as an artist but I have not been afraid to experiment with different styles. When working on a project titled ‘Plastinction,’ I decided to experiment with stop motion to develop a campaign against single-use plastic. The ‘Plastinction’ project, along with others, allowed me to showcase my versatility. While many of my design skills have been honed through self-exploration and experimentation, I recognize that a solid educational foundation will be the fuse that propels my talents to new heights, helping me stand out in the competitive world of fashion design.

My portfolio serves as a testament to my capabilities, showcasing my proudness in illustration, sewing, textile creation, photography, and a profound understanding of the subject.

Through my current studies, I've already uncovered layers of hidden potential. In textiles class, I've learned the art of conceptualizing, visually communicating ideas and textile manipulation. My design sketches have become bolder in terms of applying my style, and my ability to organize ideas has matured. In my media class, I've absorbed the art of organization, and developed a filmmaker's eye, by taking inspiration from other filmmakers and adding my special twist in cinematography and storyline. In my Plastinction project I was inspired by Wes Anderson and Tim Burton, I used similar shot techniques and angles.

When filming and editing I like to experiment with different styles of media but I also have been exploring the themes of light and dark. The theme revolves around blending darkness into cheerful scenes, creating an unsettling atmosphere. It's about hiding creepy undertones in happy environments, giving an overall eerie feel. Ive used this theme in my plastinction campaign and in my illustration. When it comes to my fashion style and aesthetic I like to think out of the box and have something elegant but also eccentric and dark. I like to tell a story and make my designs express a deep meaning and feel. As of now my style is continuously evolving and stepping up the ladder to find my identity as a designer. Studying fashion design will help me hown my individual style to create iconic garments and make a great impact in the history of fashion.

My passion goes beyond the classroom. My hunger for knowledge drives me to independent reading, delving into fashion history, and exploring sustainable fashion practices. I believe that fashion is more than just clothes; it's a critical and dynamic form of expression that is a vital part of the ever-changing history of a more sustainable world.

My goal is not just to design beautiful garments but to lead the charge towards a more responsible, sustainable, and innovative fashion industry.

Outside of academia, I've embraced leadership as the unofficial captain of my volleyball team. I've fostered kittens, a testament to my responsibility and compassion, and made my creative mark by upcycling clothing to breathe new life into fashion as well as keeping a green thumb as I care deeply about sustainability.

At (the university), I'm eager to not only explore but excel in the art of fashion design. I envision a path that's not just about learning but also leaving a lasting imprint in the history of fashion. After my university journey, I see myself thriving in an internship, learning the ropes of the fashion world from within. As I gain experience, I'll elevate my skills, understanding, and portfolio. As I alluded to above, fashion design is not just a career path, it's a journey, one that will eventually lead to me realizing my dream of establishing my own sustainable fashion brand.

In summary, I see fashion design as more than a subject—it's my calling. And at (the university), I don't just intend to learn; I plan to redefine. I aspire to be more than just a designer; I aspire to be a change-maker in the fashion industry, pushing the boundaries of creativity while maintaining sustainability. The approach I had on this statement is how I approach my fashion.

Final Mars Interview

Word count: 4423

Personal Feedback:

Watching this interview it's clear that I look nervous and unprepared. I'm not great at public speaking especially when I have to memorize answers. I stutter in the video which is a big NO in an interview. In the interview, I don't make so much eye contact with the interviewer which is also something I have to improve on. Next time I do an interview I will practise in front of a mirror and try to memorize my answer. I also think I should include more personal anecdotes in the answers and when listing my skill I should give more evidence of when I've used it or how I would use it in order to save a problem on Mars. I think talking about my communication skills was relevant and important because it linked to my skills and I gave an example of how I would use the skill. My posture on the other hand is good and I'm presenting myself professionally. Overall I think I need to be more specific about when I've used my skills and be more confident when talking.

Final Interview

Personal Feedback:

When answering my interview questions I tend to feel nervous and when being watched and having to present my mind goes elsewhere. I forget most of what I rehearsed which led to stuttering and saying words like Um, and, so, etc... I knew this would happen so before going to school I practiced a couple of times and read through my notes in class before the interview with my peers. It did help to practise the night before in front of the mirror and to revise my notes. I did this to get rid of some of my nerves and to have the notes familiar. Althoug i preped before I still got caught up in my head and stuttured and forgot some of my key points to talk about. I do think my eye contact improved and how I presented myself (posture) I do wish I payed attention to the headphones before the interview because it doesnt look very professional to have headphones around my neck in an interview.

Personal Reflection

When looking back at my work I think I have successfully branded myself. I have a specific and distinct style that is clear throughout my work. My Ideas are clear and my style is also clear which is what I am most comfortable with when branding myself. I do believe I have some areas of growth when it comes to knowing what I stand for and what message I am trying to portray.

Based on my skills audit in B1.1 I think I have best showcased my creative skills, my technical skills, Editing, sewing, photography, drawing, communication, etc.. I have been showing my communication skills by communicating my ideas and I have been communicating who I am through all my B1 work. I've communicated my design, drawing, and media process as well as who my inspirations are, what I've learned, etc... I communicated my inspiration for Tim Burton in my pMy technical skills, which are sewing, filming, photography, drawing, and editing have all been displayed in my portfio. In my portfolio, I separated every project to showcase all my skills. In my drawing page, I showed my drawing skills, and my style which further branded me as my drawing style is unique. My editing and filming skills are shown on my plastinction page where I Included screenshots of my editing and included some scenes that stood out.

When considering my future aspirations, the creation of my video CV, written CV, and personal statement has helped me show who I am as an artist.  The creation of my CV was inspired by the layout of my portfolio. I liked the red in my portfolio, I think red is a color that represents me at the moment. Another reason why red resonates with me and my style is because of my anatomy project. I also think it's because red is the color of blood and my work has included some dark and bloody imagery. The CV layout itself already represents a bit of who I am and shows that im bold which has helped me brand myself by using the color red, as it is seen throughout my portfolio, my CV video, and my cover letter. The information on the CV includes many skills both soft and hard,  and my diverse background in languages and schools makes me stand out from others. Including my extracurriculars helps me show that I like to work, and learn and have dedicated time to grow more by attending and participating in these extracurriculars. My video CV included many photos and videos of my work and featured my art pieces in the background to fully show what I am all about. As mentioned before I use the color red to brand myself and I specifically put on my red shirt for that matter. In the video Cv I dived deeper when talking about my inspirations, goals, and skills, and gave evidence. For example, when mentioning inspirations I inserted a photo of the inspiration or reference. Additionally, I was very specific about my style and showcased who I am as an artist.

When creating my Portfolio I looked at the universities I have chosen and read what they want to see in a portfolio and what to do and not to do in a portfolio. I added my process and steps to the final projects and included inspiration, research, and reference photos. I did it this way because universities want to see the process and how I got to the final outcome instead of just seeing the finished product. When it comes to aesthetics I kept the portfolio simple in order for it to be easily accessible. I included my own touch, for example, I added the long arm to connect to one of the photos in my portfolio.

Practicing the interview questions helped me prepare for a real interview because when having to do the Mars interview I had to think outside the box and it exercised my brain to think deeper or more abstract rather than a straightforward answer. It helped me to apply evidence when talking about my skills in the Mars interview. When doing the final Interview I took the same initiative of applying evidence of when I used my skill.

My priorities in completing my next B4 unit are to focus on elevating my product and cinematography. I also want to blend both subjects to display both of my works in one. I also want to create more things and plan the process more to communicate my ideas and outcomes. For example, in media and textiles, when doing the research and working on planning ideas I sometimes dive straight into the final product instead of having a process that doesn't let universities know how I think creatively. In order to grow and support my univisity aspirations i will Include a great amount of fashion in my videos for media.

To ensure to get into University I still need to work on my portfolio. I intend to undertake a self initiated project that aligns more closely with the expectations for university-level students. I hope my portfolio will be stronger to make my work look attractive and also grab the admissions officers' attention with my unique style when reviewing my portfolio. I will also need to create a better cover letter and CV so also showcase myself as an employee and because I can do better on my cover letter. What I need to improve on my portfolio is to include more sketches and fashion drawings, show my process more, add pages from my sketchbook, Add extra projects, and make the portfolio in PDF because universities and jobs like to view portfolios that way instead of going on Wix.
