PLASTINCTION

This was a BTEC assignment where we had to make 3 posters and create a video campaign to promote the boycotting of single-use plastics.

Logo

This logo is very on-brand for me. The drawing of the earth is made in my style. I would describe my style as very cartoony and unrealistic but creepy. There is something about the way I draw that makes it look creepy and unsettling. When drawing the faces any detail can change the way the character looks. making the mouth go all the way to the eyes creates an unsettling and creepy smile. This is similar to Joker's design which is why he has an unsettleing smile. I wanted to create a logo of the earth with signs saying Stop plastic and a polluted planet behind it to show that this could be our planet. The creepy smile, large eyes, and eye bags give a sense of creepiness but also make it look fun. In my opinion, I completely match my campaign aesthetic of being dark and shocking with a mix of innocence and hidden meaning.

This is me working on the "clay" props for my poster and campaign. Creating the clay characters gave me insight into how difficult creating clay figures for stop motion really is. The process of making the clay characters was tedious because I did not have any experience working with it and while I was working on making the clay characters I did not have the materials or the knowledge on how to use plasticine. For the base, I used aluminum foil to create the shape of the characters using less material. I based this character on the actor in the blown-away scene, I wish I had paid more attention to detail when filming because it would have made more sense if in the video the actor was wearing jeans. When making the plasticine character I used my style with the big mouth and eye bags to represent my signature style.

The design of the fish was inspired by the TV show "Bojack Horseman" The universe of the show is mixed with animals and humans. The animals behave like humans but with their stereotypical animalistic attributes. It also gave me the inspiration to create a half-fish human for the poster. I traced the image from the show and then changed some things and included my personal style that I have applied everywhere in this project.

Plastinction Video

This is my final video. For my Plastinction project, I made a stop motion video to promote the boycotting of single-use plastics. I chose to do a stop motion video in order to present something different to stand out and to push boundaries when it comes to the storyline and the messages. The direction I took for this campaign was to shock the audience and make them feel shocked, guilty, and slightly creeped out. The reason why I have chosen to use stop motion for my video is because stop motion can be seen as creepy and uncomfortable, because of the way things move when played in stop motion. It also gave me more freedom to exaggerate my message and make an unrealistic and fictional narrative that represents real-life events. I took a lot of inspiration from directors and stop-motion movies such as Fantastic Mr.Fox by Wes Anderson, and Coraline by Tim Burton. Their styles of storytelling and aesthetics also inspired me to film. I had some shots where I used symmetry and similar angles and shots of Wes Anderson. My favorite scene is the scene where the girl eats the fish and pulls out a long string of plastic. This had a lot of meaning and it was exaggerating the amount of microplastic there is in your food, and how polluting the ocean causes fish to die and also slowly kill us. The blown-away scene was challenging to film but I used problem-solving skills to fix my mistake and make my video look good. The blown-away scene where the bag flies into the character's face was reversed to make it look like its flying to his face but in reality, I had to pull a string. A lot of planning and editing was necessary to create this campaign. Each scene of the campaign is presented in the posters.

"Blown Away" Poster

This is the first poster that is related to the first scene of my campaign. When thinking of ideas I was really interested in making a Stop motion campaign because I see stop motion as an unsettling and creepy form of animation, especially in Tim Burton movies. The Idea of using stop motion in my video made me come to the idea of using clay for my posters because of stop motion is linked with clay (clay animation) When coming up with rough sketches and prototypes of my poster I immediately thought of Wallace because he's a famous clay character that appears in stop motion movies such as "Wallace and Gromit". I took inspiration from real-life problems that everyone sees often, which as plastic bags being blown away by wind polluting the area. Because my theme was dark/exaggerated I decided to make the plastic bag in the wind issue the main message of this poster. Coming up with title ideas was difficult as I didn't know what would be an effective way of saying my message in order to influence others to do what the poster says or have a deep message that would resonate with the audience. I managed to find a way to make the Fishy Surprise poster and Blown Away poster have a similar message of saying "BOYCOTT single-use plastic" to make the posters look good together and cohesive.  I took inspiration from other posters to help me with the layout of the poster. I chose to go simple with the text to not overpower the image. I experimented with shifting and morphing the text to create an Interesting font effect. I also chose to make the background color green to represent the environment, being green, eco-friendly, etc...

"Hangout" Poster

The concept of my "hangout" poster came very naturally, when thinking about ways to create a creative campaign to stop the use of single-use plastic, I knew I wanted to use shock and be dark about the message. When using shock I immediately thought of death, because plastic is killing the earth and our sea life. When going into the fish direction I didn't just want to show a dead fish so I drew a fish being hung by plastic. In order to portray a meaningful message. The reason the fish has the body of a human is because I wanted to express the idea that we are not only killing our sea life but we are also killing ourselves by polluting. That made me come up with the title of the poster "DONT KILL YOURSELF KILL SINGLE USE PLASTIC!!!". The background color is green because everyone associates green with recycling, being eco-friendly, environmentally aware, etc... Blue is the color of the ocean which represents where most of our single-use plastics go. The background also matches with all the other posters making them look coheisive. The Text font is also cohesive with the other posters as well and the background color is the same as the Hangout poster.   I tried many ways of laying out this poster trying out different styles, fonts, and colors but I believed less is more and I needed to keep the poster consistent when it came to font, color, and background.

Storyboard

My storyboard consisted of 3 separate scenes. Blown away, Fishy Surprise, and Hangout. The first scene is called "Blown Away", I chose to have titles for every scene to make it clear they are separate but also to replicate what old movies used to do which was to include the names of each chapter or part of the movie. It's a similar concept to a curtain drop in order to transition to the next scene. The titles also indicate the theme of the scene, so "Blown Away" is about a bag being blown away, "Fishy Surprise" is about a fish filled with plastic which was the surprise, and 'Hangout' is a scene where people hangout but also get hanged. The storyboard came across very naturally to me, once I came up with the concept of the posters I visualized my video in my head and drew it on my storyboard. There are some things that I changed like the animation in the beginning but I found the storyboard extremely helpful when filming because it reminded me of what shots I had to film.

Edditing

Once the video has been converted I start watching and cutting the video every time a new shot is taken so I can separate the shots easily instead of deleting 1 frame every time to edit. This turned my stop motion photos into one full video so I could easily cut all the scenes that I didn't need and I could also choose to change the frames per second by speeding up the video so that my stop motion video is smoother and not so choppy, to replicate stop motion in movies. I also included sound effects that made the video satisfying and brought it all together.

My way of making my stop motion videos is by collecting all the photos I took to create the stop motion Video using Burst and transferring all the photos to iMovie. Then I convert each photo to be 0.1 seconds long so it captures that stop motion feel. When I changed all the images to be 0.1 seconds and to not zoom in and out as Imovies default, I uploaded the footage to convert into a video.
