B4.3

Test shots

15-23

Evaluation : I like the shot and how it tilts up. It will create a surprising reveal to the faces and leave the characters wondering what is wrong with the face. I plan to make a mask for the final cut, and add the effect, but maybe having the dark effects change overtime as the story unfolds, to add to my color connotation in order to tell the story and make it clear.

Intention:  Include a track shot and gradually tilting the camera up revealing the face.
Changing the color of the shots will help to create a mood within the scenes.

Technical detail:
Track shot, medium close up, tilting up. Making the scene darker and grey creates the feeling of sadness and lonelyness.

Evaluation : I like this shot. I will use it to enhance the feeling of the two characters being related and experiencing the same feelings. It will also show how the characters are walking towards each other. Next time I will align the shots better and make it so that the split screen is even on both sides

Intention: To create a split screen  sceen where the charcters would walk in opposite directions towards them to show the conection between them and to  depict a simontaniois storyline occurring in different locations. This technique allows the audience to witness multiple narrative threads unfolding simultaneously, providing a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of characters or events.

Technical detail:

When editing the split screen I made sure to split in the middle and leaving a small gap to separate the scenes I also tried to keep the actor in the middle while track shotting.

Evaluation : I really liked the dutch angle and the use of 0.5 lense because it creates this distorted and isolating feeling that the characters will be feeling in the story. I want to use these angles in my music video and add more angles to show all parts of the characters and add viarity of shots so that it doesn't get repetitive

Intention :
Testing different angles to see what each angle creates what feeling.

Technical detail:
Using  the 0.5 lense on my phone added a lot of empty space in the shot in order to create the feeling of lonelyness and being isolated. Using a dutch tilt to  create a disorienting or uneasy feeling in a scene. I also used angles and shots like wes anderson.

Evaluation : I think the way the actor is walking on beat feels satisfying. I also like how the shots gradually reveals the characters.I will be including this in my final shots. I will consider adding more shots before revealing for a more dramatic effect and make the audience question what is wrong with the body and certain parts for longer.

Intention :

Having the actor walk to the beat of the song. Revealing the body slowly to make the viewers think its a normal person but slowly revealing the body will make the audience pick out that the character doesnt have conventional features. The actor will be slouching and having the shoulders drop and have a pulse like walk to represent that they are sad.

Technical detail:

tracking close up shot of shoes. Editing the shots in sync with the beat. Making cuts on beat and syncing foot steps to the music beat.

Test shots

10-14

Evaluation : When filming the final I will try to fix the lighting and pay attention to where the light comes from in the picture i will use it as the backdrop in the green screen. Use a ring light with different settings to have warm or cool lighting. I also will change some of the filter settings by adding more exposure and making the scene look more dreamlike and fantasy and vibrant.

Intention :
I was experimenting with different angles and perspectiv
es in order to make it look like one of the butterflies is further away from the other and they are waving at eachother. I added the green screen on the floor

Technical detail:

Over the shoulder shot medium close up to shoulder.
Green screen was added on the floor to allow the full body to be included in the shot without parts being cut off.

Evaluation :

I will animate and make gifs of bees so that they have some movement and aren't just stationary. I will make the wings move up and down and have 2 versions of the bees ( one with angry faces and the other with nutral) Doing this would make the bees look better and smoother. Having the bees animated one by one will also make the scene look better as it wont be the same bees moving at the same speed and crowd. I also will direct the actors to interact with the fake bees and make the fighting look more realistic.

Intention

I was experimenting with how I would animate the bees into my video. I used drawings of bees and animated them using tracking on capcut. My intention was to make the bees look like they were attacking and the butterflies are fighting back.  Th

Technical detail:

I used minal tracking movement dots which makes it move less and doesnt look natural and its acting more in a line but with more track movement It would be smoother. I will also try changing the size to show that the bees are getting closer to the camera.

Evaluation :
Once again the green screen did not have a floor so the legs had to be cut off which ruins the shot of the characters jumping. I will also need to use a tripod to stablelize the camera.

Intention

Wanted to film a shot where the butterflies are jumping on the flowers and interacting with the green screen instead of it just being a backround.

Technical detail:

Wide long shot in order to show the audeince the scenery and the scale of the setting to show how small the butterflies are to imerse the audeince in the flower garden. Wide shot allows me to compose the shot of the two butterflies to show that they are alone and have to help eachother.

Evaluation : I like the background moving, I think I will include moving backgrounds in all my shots while using the green screen unless some of the videos have too much movement. I also want to smoothen the way they fly and slow it down as they move fast which is accurate to how butterflies travel but for the viewer's enjoyment, I think I will slow it down. When the butterflies are on the flower in the end I want the zoom-in to be a bit smoother and seamlessly transition to the dancing scene. Also while flying maybe have a close-up of them flying together. filming them from side angles or having them move from side angles to front angles will also make the video look better and make them look like they are changing positions rather than facing the front.

Intention :

My intention was to use a video as the green screen to make the scene look more lively and interactive, rather than the backround being still. I experimented with the flying effect and changing the scale to make the butterflies look like they are flying closer and further from the camera. This shot was inspired by footage of butterflies in a garden. in the end i made them very small and zoomed into the flower which will be used as a transition to the next scene of them dancing on the same flower.

Technical detail:

Changing the scale and positon of the actors made the flying look more realistic rather than the actors staying the same size and flying up down and side to side. The video added to the backround is much better than a still photo. I used a long shot and wide angle to replicate the butterfly in a garden footage. Filming this was simple as I only had to film the actors waving their hands up and down and horizontally as the body will be cut out.

Intention: end of transition from flying butterfly scene to scene of butterflys dancing. I change the image of the flower because  in the scene with the butterflys flying they land on a daisy flower.

Technical detail:

Full body is on the flower, dancing scenes cut to create a montage and present snippets of them having fun and being happy. Representing time passing. Used a long shot to show full flower and body.

Evaluation : Next time I plan to add green screen on the floor in order to film the entire body without seeing the floor and green screen flaws. I will also put my phone on the tripod so that the camera stays still and films a better shot that doesnt break the illusion of this being a green screen as much

Intention :

I was experimenting with different angles and perspectives in order to make it look like one of the butterflies is further away from the other .

Technical detail:

used the green screen in order to film this scene. I filmed the actors seperately and horizontally as the angle wouldnt matter because the backround will be removed. The camera was not set on a tripod which is why it looks like the actor is hovering. I filmed an over the shoulder medium shot and a long shot. I made the male actor even smaller when editing and shifted where he stood on the flower.

Evaluation :

I will animate and make gifs of bees so that they have some movement and arent just stationary. I will make the wings move up and down and have 2 versions of the bees ( one with angry faces and the other with nutral) Doing this would make the bees look better and smoother. Having the bees animated one by one will also make the scene look better as it wont be the same bees moving at the same speed and crowd.

Intention :
I was experimenting with how I would animate the bees into my video. I used drawings of bees and animated them using tracking on capcut.

Technical detail:

I used minal tracking movement dots which makes it move less and doesnt look natural and its acting more in a line but with more track movement It would be smoother. I will also try changing the size to show that the bees are getting closer to the camera.

Evaluation :  I will have to edit each video to match the lighting and color in the background because the lighting is still not seamless and the actors don't look like they are in the plants. I also will have to close all the blinds and block out any light that isn't controlled so I can manually adjust where the light comes from to fit with the light position in the background. I also will want to add another shot by zooming in to get a close-up of the actors' faces. Having a tripod will also be necessary as the camera moves making the actors hover and move while on the flower

Intention :

I intended to refilm the shot of the butterflies jumping on the flower.

Technical detail:

Adding the green screen on the floor allowed me to film below the knees which improved the quality and the illusion of shot.
using a still long shot helped to show the scale of the actors and to make them as small as butterflies. I added a ring light to make the video have the same lighting position as the image.

Intention

Technical detail:

Evaluation :

EvaluationI will want the spinning to be a little bit faster and have the actor react to the spinning as in this test shot he is emotionless. I want to evoke a little bit of fear into the character. I like the background of used, it reminds me of my colorful editing technique seen in my "Touch, Texture, Everything" Video. I think using the photo below will add my personal touch to the music video and will create an irregular magical flower. Also zooming into the face and seeing it spin like a head in a washing machine could possibly be used as a transition to another scene like an illusion spiral.

Intention :

I wanted to create the scene where the butterflies are flying into the odd flower and getting sucked in which will transition into the next scene where the butterflies will be human size. I inteded to make the butterfly spin and shrink into the flower, slighty inspired by alice in the wonderland in the scene where she falls into the tree

Technical detail:

Medium still long shot. I used the tracking technique by manually changing the size and position in every frame to create that smooth shrinking and spiining shot to give the illusuion that the character is being sucked into the flower.

Test shots

5-9

Evaluation :  I think this test shot looked good. The curtain animation also wasn't bad but I think there are better curtain openings out there, The quality of the curtain doesn't fully match the puppet's video quality.

Intention

My intention was to add a video of a theater curtain opening to reveal the puppets in order to make the scene look more accurate to puppet shows and make the audience connect these curtains to theater or plays before seeing anything.

Technical detail:

Long establishing shot in the frame showing the outline of the stage.
Downloaded a noncopy written green screen effect from YouTube of a theater curtain opening, and removed the background to reveal the puppet stage.

Evaluation :  I think this test shot looked good. The curtain animation also wasn't bad but I think there are better curtain openings out there, The quality of the curtain doesn't fully match the puppet's video quality.

Intention

Same intention but closing the curtains to signify the end of the music video or end of the puppet show.
I Made the puppets bow as actors and puppets do in shows before closing the curtains

Technical detail:

Long shot in the frame with the stage showing the outline of the stage. I Downloade
d a noncopy written green screen effect from YouTube of a theater curtain opening and removed the background to reveal the puppet stage.

Evaluation :  When filming with the real puppets it will be important for me to not make certain gestures that could be seen as inappropriate such as the kissing even though the intention was to make it look like they were hugging. Adding more cuts of them showing affection is also something that I want to add including close-ups of their face to later transition to the real-life scene using a fade.

Intention :

Making the puppets mirror what the actor will be doing, whihc includes hugging the bear, holding it against her face, physical acts of affection.

Technical detail:

long shot keeping stage in frame, having puppets come up from the stage. Fast paste eddting in this scene to make it seem as they are playing and enjoying eachothers company and evoke a feeling of time passing by.

Evaluation :  I like this effect, I could possibly use it to transition from the puppet scene to the live action or vice versa.

Intention

Making  the scene look like its capturing the wonderfull memories of joy by adding a photo shutter effect. The black and white images represent the past and memories as black and white is in the past and they hold a lot of memories in this current day.

Technical detail:

Using cap cut effect template to add this effect.

Evaluation :  I think the idea is good but the template is very blurry and doesn't make the video look good. The kids also might not understand the purpose of this shot as they might not know about film videos so it would mean nothing to them confusing them slightly.

Intention

Using this effect to transition into different scenes as i also want to pay homage to the era of the beeatles where film was used. It creates a window for me to easily transition from one scene to another without having to focus too much on making it seemless as it does it for me.

Technical detail:

Used a special effect template on capcut.

Evaluation:  I like this shot. I plan to do this shot again but using the plush bear instead of the wreck it Ralph. I like this green location as it looks like the stage with the green and blue sky.

Intention

I intended to do a simba moment with the pose as its a way to show love by carrying the bear up

Technical detail

I di d a medium long shot tracking the plush toy over the shoulder of the child actor.

Evaluation :  I like this shot as it shows a connection between the two characters. I could make the scene look more vibrant to appeal to the target audience.

Intention

Track shot, zoom  into plush and out to show the child, the shot creates a connection between the two "characters" Showing how close they are through the close up

Technical detail:

i held my camera tight and stabilised, and using the grids to keep everything in frame. I also synced the movement of the shot with the song .

Talent Confirmation

Confirmed actors Amy and Alfie for availability to film butterfly scenes.

Asked Katie (Student) If she can show me what colorful clothes she has for the butterfly costume.

DATE:

Feb/5/2023

Katie showed me the costumes, and i picked out which ones i will need and set them aside for the 7th as i have planned to film on that day.

I also asked Ms.Goulet if she could bring the butterfly wings on the 6th so I can have everything ready before in case someone forgets to bring on filming day.

DATE:

April/7/2023

Production day:

Showed actors the costumes and made some small changes, as some things looked better together than others.

I set up the lights, tripod and green screen an hour before shooting so actors wouldn't have to wait.

Followed my storyboard and notes of the extra shots i need.

Took 2 hours to film.

Making the mask:

Took 2 maniquin heads for the base of the mask.

Used tin foil to create the shape of the masks,

making sure the masks align to create a heart like shape, and added different facial features to create a masculine and feminine character.

Wrapped in tape to secure the foil

and started on my first layer of paper mache.

Mask:

Created paper mache paste by blending soaked paper and andheisive.

Started to created a base layer of paper mache for the male face.

While letting it dry i worked on the female face.

Working on starting details for the male face

DATE:

May/10/2023

Fixed male face after it dried the next day, and worked on the female face again, building up the layers and textures.

I added 2 teardrops to the female character because I wanted to include more color and more emphasis on the sad and lonely expressions on the face.

Let both dry

May/11/2023

Mask:
Sanded the faces, and got them ready for paint

Added one top coat of white paint for a clean base, making sure i covered everything.

DATE:

May/12/2023

I painted the faces in a greyish light skin tone but i had to change the paint color as i was working in the dark with a warm light and didnt read the color correctly as it turned out to be grey pink  in natural light.

I mixed the paint to an accurate color and made different shades.

Painted both masks in their skin tone, and waited for them to dry

Started to roughly paint the eyelids, lips, and cheeks as i would go over the rough areas with the skin toned paint.

DATE:

May/13/2023

The nexy day I got back on painting the details and used makeup techniques to make the face look more detailed and "realistic".

I highlighted their eyes, added pink blush to the female masks cheeks and, contour to contour certain areas to make them more defined.

As i waited to dry I went to the thrift store to buy a dress  for the female character and a suit for the male character.

The dress was perfect for this project because it already looked similar to a can can dress as it had a lot of ruffles and layers.

I finished painting the details on the masks

I spent the night unbeading the dress as it had a lot of stones and i didn't want them.

DATE:

May/15/2023

I bought some bleach to make the thrifted dress white, but after an hour of bleaching i didn't see any change in the color and realised the dress was starting to disinegrate.
I researched and made the discovery that silk will break apart when bleached and will not bleach.
I went to another thrift store and picket out pieces that had ruffles, tulle, and an 60-70's pattern. When looking through the store i also found a hat which i thought i could use to make antennas for the butterfly video.
I started to add wire and glue the hat to make my antenna hat, I covered the glued areas in fabric paint for a smooth and seamless finish.

DATE:

May/16/2023

I bleached my new thrifted peices today for the womens look, but once again not everything bleached. I should of checked the material label of the pieces i picked out to see if they would bleach.
I did some research online and was told that to bleach synthetic fabrics you need to boil them.
I boiled for 4 hours and saw that one out of 3 pieces did bleach. The rest had a faded color but wasn't white.
I washed and dried them for the next day were i would plan out how i would make it.

May/17/2023

I looked for a big cardboard box to make the puppet stage.

I sketched out the shape of the stage opening and cut it out.

Painted the inside of the stage. I painted the bottom green for grass and the walls a light blue with clouds.

Went to diaso to buy false lashes for the female mask, some pompoms for the butterfly hat, felt for the human puppet, a pillow for the bear puppet, and pearls for the female look.

Started to drape the dress and figure out what the sillouhette was going to be like.

I made many drapes as i didn't like my other ideas.

Took a picture of a drape that i liked and started to visualise it in a fashion drawing.

Made minor adjustments and detailed photos so i can redrape the dress in school in order to start making the female costume.

DATE:

DATE:

May/20/2023

I added the curtains to the puppet stage using hot glue and a red fabric.

Drapped and pined the dress

Made my actor (amy) try on the dress before making changes that could unable the actor to fit in the dress to make sure it does.

Added multiple coats of spray paint to the first layer of my dress to make the dress structural and semi solid.

Waited for it to dry and added a final coat of acrylic varnish to solidify the base of the costume even more.

Made my model try on the dress after drying.

Followed a tutorial for a bear puppet.

Cut out my pillow as it had a similar color and texture to the teddy bear.

Cut the pattern, Pinned pieces together, and sewed.

Added small details to the puppet such as buttoned eyes, ears, and a nose.

Was editing the butterfly video, making adjustments to the animation and focusing on the title and adding effects

I was given the feedback from Ms. Goulet to not use internet images for the background of my green screen. Especially the kholidescope

I looked through my camera roll to see if I could find images or videos of flowers. I replaced the background and adjusted the animation again to align with the movements and scale of the butterflies.

I added buttons to my real teddy bear to make them look similar so my audience can connect the two characters in puppet form and real form.

I had a polka dot dress but i wanted to create a top that would represent some of women insecurities.

Since it was the top i drapped and pinned the dress to fold on itself and creating these saggy drapped ridges to represent belly rolls.

It took me some time to sew and there were areas that i couldn't sew on so i had to use hot glue, I used it to my advantage as it allowed me to extend the fabric to create a more belly roll look.

I also cut the front and the back to make a shorter top.

I also set up and filmed a test shot of the puppets to figure out how i need to angle the puppets, how to light the set, and to get everything ready for Friday as I planned to film on that day.

The reason it was only a test shot is because the human puppet didn't have any clothes.

After school I glued strands of thread on the head and glued on the top and dress on the puppet to give it some clothes.

I also worked on the hairy tights for the mask costume.

I cut a dolls hair

I created a pattern for the tights using tape.

I cut the tape off my legs and laid out the pattern flat to cut it with fabric. I then pinned the mesh fabric and sewed.

The tights turned out to be too small and the fabric didn't stretch so i had to make the end wider in order for the feet to fit.

I took some spray adhesive and glued the hairs on the inside of the tights and spread them out and tried to create a pattern and thickness consistency with the hair.

I repeated this step twice.

At home I dropped and pinned the suit to create this A symmentriacal look.

I manipulated parts of the body using gathering technique on the sleeves and pants to create a wrinkly texture and look to the suit. I also changed the shape in the back and the sides to have some parts sticking out.

I used myself as the model to make sure it fits.

I took close up photos so i could repin at school

I made Alfie (male actor) try on the suit and it didn't fit but I unpinned certain areas that could have impacted the fitting and repinned them in order to fit Alfie.

I sewed the pins to keep the shape and made my actor try it on again to double check it fits.

I painted the eyes on the masks and removed them from the maniquin heads and stretched them out so they would be wearable.

I forgot to ask for permission to leave school with my actors to film so ii improvised and used a similar-looking location in school. I made the actors put on the costumes and went to the location to film

The floor was uneven and there were many rocks.

My actors couldn't see inside the masks and were starting to get really hot in the masks.

I let them take breaks in between filming.

I also encountered another issue with the actors. It was really difficult for them to walk in a straight line or understand the direction I was giving them because they couldn't see.

Due to the time limit, I didn't have to film as much as I wanted too.

I will consider adding eye holes for the actors and making sure to book them out of school to use my intended location. I will also plan to film earlier in the morning as it's not as hot and reduces the risk of overheating.

After school, I filmed my puppet video as everything was set up and ready.

I filmed 4 cuts just in case one of the cuts doesn't look as good as the other.

I played the song while puppeteering to make the puppets lipsyinc the song and so i could make the puppets dance on beat.

I improvised some parts and in every cut I would do something different or watch. my video back and think of what i could do to improve or need to change.

I edited my puppet video and used test shots of the real actor in areas i will want the actor to be in.

Since I didn't have the final shots of the girl with the teddy bear I filled in those parts with test shots so when i record the real video i can quickly replace the test shot with the actual footage.

I researched how to make a kolidescope effect on after effects and it took a long time to accomplish due to me not being very skilled with after effects. I watched a tutorial and made it.

I asked my friends if they can send me photos and videos of flowers to see if i could use some for my green screen backrrops. One of my friends lives in Amsterdam and its known for being very green and full of flowers and asked my friend to film them.

I also went out and saw some flowers and recorded them. (they weren't very pretty and were in dirt and not grass so i had to fix the angle to make them look natural and not planted.

I replaced the old backgrounds with the new ones and once again adjusted the animation.

Edited the mask music video, followed my storyboard and cut on beat.

Kept the video editing simple

changed the filter of the video

Had to reuse some shots in other scenes due to not filming enough.

Will have to reshoot the mask scene.

Fully planned out the refilming for the butterfly video. I gathered parts of the new costume and asked katie to bring the clothes I used for the first cut in the music video. I asked the actors what days they would be free to film in the green screen room. They said the 5th

DATE:

May/5/2023

One of the actors were not able to film so I rescheduled for the 6th. I used this time to prepare the green screen room and lights so that on the day of filming I don't waste filming time to set up.

I filmed with the other costumes. Im happy changing the costumes bevaise they were similar in style and they were more united in color. The male actor wore more blue and the female actress wore red/pink.

Male and female mask, leg hair tights, Can can dress costume, and suit costume

IMG_6569_edited.png
IMG_6548_edited.png
IMG_6546_edited.png

The first step when making the mask was to grab 2 mannequin heads in order to mold the shape of the heads. I used the drawing I made as a reference to make sure I have similar proportions, features, and shapes. I used tin foil and tape to secure the layers of tin foil. I kept intertwining the faces to fix any areas and make sure they were intertwinable. I also made sure that the faces would somewhat resemble a heart. I compressed any rough areas by batting the masks with a paintbrush. I also pushed in some areas to later add facial features. I was very meticulous when making the female and male faces. I made sure the woman's face was smaller and more feminine while the male face is more triangular and musclely

After getting the faces shapes I created a paper mache paste by blending papermache glue, and moist papers I went in with a rough first layer so that the next thicker and more detailed layers would stick better to the mask. By the third layer I started to add the details like the eyes, lips, brows, eye bags, etc... In the fourth layer I fixed the textures and added bumps and "wrinkles" I made sure i wasnt adding too much texture to the skin but also wanted the skin to look wrinkly and odd.

My last step was to paint the masks. Innitially I got the wrong skin color due to me working in a dark room with yellow lights which made me unaware of the actual color of the skin. I researched how to mix skin color to ensure I have an accurate skin tone. I made the skin pale and grey because grey skin is used to connote sadness.

For the female character I painted her lips red and added blush and contour to make her look like she is wearing makeup to further distinctify the two masks and to add a bit of realism into the masks. Because the theme is insecurities and she has an odd face her "wearing makeup" Is a way to make herself feel more confident and pretty. I painted blond eye brows and green eyes because I used Iris caldwell as a reference and she had blond hair and green eyes. I did the same for paul Mccartny by painting his eyes and brows brown.

Making these masks gave me an oportunity to bring out my signature style with the eye bags and big eyes.

In the final touches, I added blue eye drops on the female character which gives her a really nice pop of color and makes the mask more dramatic. I also added eye lashes to further feminise the mask.

Finally I made an insision in the back of the masks and stretched them out and pushed the foil down so that I could fit a head in.

IMG_2969_edited.png
IMG_2970_edited.png

I innitially bought a dress from a thrift store and picked out this blue dress because it already came with the ruffles just like the can-can dresses. The only problem was the color so I decided to bleach it. After bleaching the dress completely fell apart and deteriorated, I didn't realize that this material couldn't withstand bleach.

IMG_6633_edited.png

I used the material from the disintegrated dress to add more volume to the dress.

I sewed the blue tulle from the disintegrated dress on the flower dress in a way that would bring more volume to one side of the dress to create an uneven puff silhouette.

I spray painted the dress to stiffen the dress to create a structured base because i plan to cover it with another dress on top. Sculpting the bottom layer to give it more shape and this uneven distorted look.

I did 5 layers of spray paint to ensure it would solidify but it dindt get as solid as i wanted so i added one thin layer of varnish which helped it keep its shape.

The ladybug pattern was done just for fun but it gives the dress a bit of a beatles refference.

Drew over the drape and planned out how i wanted the dress to look like.

I wanted to create distorted pedestrian look but add the can can frills detail at the bottom so my research can be seen int he costume

I then seweed the red can can frill at the seam of the stiff dress. Looking back I should of sewed everything before making the dress stiff because it would have saved me a lot of time and effort.

I wanted to make leg hair stockings because leg hair is a big insecurity of women making them shave it but with these stockings, it would embrace and dramatize the leg hair but look good.

Can Can dancers are also known for wearing stockings.

I wrapped tape around my leg and cut it off my leg to create the pattern for my stockings. I cut the fabric using the pattern.

I pinned the fabric on my leg to make sure it would fit and slid it off my leg.

I sewed them 2 sides together.

I used a large paper and made a cone to keep the stockings stable and ready to spray adhesive to glue the hair. I spread the hair and added thicker areas to make the hair pattern look somewhat pretty.

I cut a dolls hair to use for my stockings

Taking inspiration from womens insecurities such as wrinkles and fat rolls, based on my research.

Using the shape of the rolls and how the skin is draping on the model to recreate onto the top.

Making sure that the folds are defined and sticking out.

I drapped and experimented how i wanted the top to fold using pins. I then glued where i pinned because the pins kept slipping out when trying to sew. After hot glueing i sewed the areas and was done with the top.

I went to the thrift store and found this long pleated poncho dress and cut it to a shorter length. I was specifically looking for a polka dot top because it was a popular pattern in the 60's and I wanted my costume to have 60's references.

Mugler was a big inspiration of mine for this hat, I found this hat in a thrift store and it had 2 flaps made to tie around the face but i used them to create antennas by adding a wire and glueing parts to secure it.

I added pom poms to the tip so they would look more like antennas.

As soon as I saw the hat Immediately thought of this collection by Mugler

Puppet and puppet stage

IMG_6796_edited.png

My first step when making my puppets was to cut out the pattern. I got a free pattern from the site https://puppetnerd.com/

I pinned it to my fabric and cut the fabric. The pattern for the body was too small for my hand so I had to adjust the size of the pattern but it didn't impact the puppet too much. I followed a tutorial and sewed all the pieces together. I added plates to the mouth so they would be more defined and easier to move. I stuffed the arms and glued the eyes to avoid a messy seam on the eyes.

The final step was to add the details, such as the hair and clothing.

I glued on the clothes using the same material as the entire body and used yarn for the hair. I tried to make my puppet's hair a similar length to that of my actor to make them look alike. I used bright colors for the puppet's clothes to contrast with the green and make the scene more fun. I made a pleated skirt for the puppet because it's something kids of the age 5-9 like to wear.

Making the bear puppet was a lot easier than making the human puppet. I used a very simple pattern from the site https://puppetnerd.com/. I cut out the pattern, ears, nose, mouth, and body. I bought a pillow from Daiso since it had a similar fluff to the teddy bear I featured in the live-action scenes. I sewed the pattern pieces together and added plastic mouth plates to create the base. I then sewed the ears and cut the nose, but it blended too much into the fabric. So, I decided to burn the surface to create a darker and rougher fur to resemble the real bear's nose. I glued the buttons and nose and was done with the puppet. I made some changes to the real bear and glued buttons to the bear's eyes to make them resemble each other even more. Overall, I think the bear puppet is really cute. Although the mouth moves a little weirdly, it gives the bear a goofy and cute personality.

I was inspired by a classic theater with big red draped curtains.

Finally I cut out the bottom of the stage where the puppets would come from. Innitially I made the hole too small and didn't have a lot of space to move so i mad it bigger to have more freedom to move.

When creating the stage, I used a big Amazon cardboard box as the base. I cut out the opening of the stage. Watching children's music videos, I realized that the backgrounds are usually very simple and include nature, trees, and clouds. Initially, I was thinking of doing a fantasy-themed background, but I decided to keep it simple and vibrant for the puppet show. I chose to make the stage look hand-painted because it gave a kid-like element to the stage and felt playful. It could be something the kids could try to recreate or paint.

I used light blue acrylic paint for the background and painted the floor a green color, adding different tones of green to make it look more like grass. I painted green at the bottom of the walls to make it more environmental and decorated the stage with trees and apples for a pop of color. I then glued fabric on the stage and folded pieces of fabric to create a pleated curtain look like theater curtains.

Editing Process
15-23

Making adjustments to the saturation, brightness and contrast was easy to play around with and while editing the video I made sure to make the mood of the scene dark and grey but also give it some cotrast so that it is more engaging to look at. I had to do a lot of adjustements on each scene beacaise lighting changed and some scenes needed more shadow to make the video look better. I did copy and paste the setting which helped to speed up this process of editing. I made sure the shadows werent too dark because i wanted the details to be visible but still create the sad and moody environment. I changed the tone and hue to a slight blue because blue is associated with sadness.

The split screen was an easy effect to add, I essentially just had to split the screen using the mask feature on cap cut and adjust the area that will be split. I added a clear line to make it clear it was a split screen because in my test shots the split screen didng have the black line and it looked like it was the same scene just mirrored.

Making the heart animation was an easy task because of how much practise I got from making the butterfly video. I just had to change the scale and positon of the heart and mark at what point it will get bigger. The dots on the heart shows how many small movements I added to each milisecond to create a smooth animation of the heart appearing and expanding into full screen. This effect was inspired by older tv series which is why this effect creates this vintage from com feel to the music video.

I used a snapchat filter to create this effect by filming myself lipsyncinng to the audio and choosing a filter that only captures my mouth and eyes. Using Capcuts cut out tool I was able to choose the black background and isolate it so that only my features would appear. I then added the video on top of a picture of a flower and adjusted the scale and potion of my eyes and mouth to fit on the flower. I copied and pasted my cut out and layered it on the image to have multiple singing flowers.

This effect looks weird but i personally like it and it reflects my style perfectly. Including a bit of oddity in each music video was my special touch.

Due to my first cut including images and videos that weren't mine, I had to create my own caleidoscope effect using a picture of a sunflower. I used aftereffects to create this effect. Luckily it wasn't too difficult to do because after effects had a Kolidescope effect option. I did have trouble figuring out how to make it work but after looking at a tutorial I managed to make it. This effect was to create the background for the flower spiral vortex scene. This was done to add a psychedelic effect and feel to the music video, paying homage to the beatles psychedelic aesthetic and sound.

Editing Process
5-9

Capcut had a lot of transitions to choose from. I added the same transitions almost every time. I used transitions when going from the puppet scene to the real scene to match cut. I used dissolve transitions so that both scenes can blend into each other to make it clear that the puppets represent the real actor and the teddy bear. In some scenes i made the transitions slower and others faster depending on the movement of the real scene.

I adjusted the color and settings of the music video. I made the colors more saturated and brighter because kids gravitate towards bright and saturated colors. It made the entire video pop and look more lively. I did make the real scene less saturated to balance the fantasy of the puppets and real life. Representing the puppets as what the kids feel like or think which is brighter and more fun and creative.

I used a green screen for the opening of my music video. The curtains open and reveals the stage. I had to select the background color the green screen had and adjust the strength to 100 and add a shadow to create a crisper line in the curtains.

I also used retro effects from cap cut to add a tv looking distorted effect. This makes the vpuppet video look vintage, referencing 60's-90's TV.

First cut
Charming  faces

Self Feedback: I think this video turned out great for the first cut. I sadly did not have time to film in a different location and it was a rushed job when filming, as my actors had plans after school. I liked the editing and how the walk was on beat most of the time and the cuts. The shots turned out good and were distorted in some places because the faces are distorted. The costumes and masks also look great, in my opinion. Even though the faces don't move, the still emotions on the faces go well with the narrative and song. My issue with this first cut is the overall narrative. To me, it makes sense, but it is missing a lot of elements. When reshooting, I plan to use different locations to make it look like they are walking in different places towards each other. When the faces align, I want to add a close-up shot of their faces and shoulder shots to show that they have seen each other and are starting to align and come together. I want a shot of them aligning instead of the faces already being aligned with no build-up. When they line up, I also will shoot scenes of them holding hands and walking together to another shot of them aligning and doing a match cut in different locations and actions to move the narrative further. Including a scene in a restaurant where they align and then a shot of the male character handing out flowers and aligning and the final scene of the male character proposing and aligning which will conclude the music video. In the ending of this first cut, I did like the red pop-up heart appearing and growing, and turning the scene red. I think this last bit looked like a vintage effect and it gives me an opportunity to include a "The End" in the text to end the narrative. This way of using match cuts will make the viewer understand that they have found a connection and have been going out for a long time resulting in marriage.

Second cut Charming  faces

Self Feedback: I refilmed everything and changed the locations because when visiting the location I planned I realised it didn't make much sense and wouldn't have been good because each scene would look very similar due to the background being an empty road with sand and a barbed wire. Picking this small park walk made the narrative more realistic because people walk in parks. I also think this location looks a lot better and prettier because of all the greenery and the cute benches. I do wish I got a shot of one of the characters sitting on the bench but overall I think it works. Im really happy with the shot of the characters intertwining. I did this by walking backwards in the shot and reversing it while editing. I also think the transitions look good and smooth, and the split screen works well in showing the distance and how they are in similar circumstances. I will want to refilm the green screen scene because the background of pairs cuts off in some areas due to the green screen not being big enough. I also will want to design the set a bit nicer, get some plates, knife and forks to make the dinner table look more realistic. I like how I used these odd pumpkins as the food. I think they look similar in texture and oddity to the characters and overall makes sense that these weird people eat weird foods. The scene where they intertwine and the background changes was done to make it look like they have gone on many different dates in many locations signifying that they love each other and will go anywhere together. The ending scene goes back to the beginning where they first met and ends with them walking away from the camera. I will want to make the heart transition cleaner and smoother as well as include a "The End" title or "Just the Beginning".

First Cut
Butterfly  Friends

Self Feedback:

This being my first cut I think its okay but has a lot of potential in being a good music video. I think the costumes look really fun and capture the colors and patterns of a real butterfly. The video also captures that low-quality 70's-80's green screen aesthetic with the effects and the way the butterflies move. Due to me using the green screen and cutout effect the wings are not very clear and sometimes fade out. Some shots are too long and need a lot more cuts to speed up the narrative and make the video more appealing to watch. Im also unhappy with how the video of the butterflies is unsaturated and pale. Im not sure how to fix this issue but i think changing the color filter of the butterflies will help to make them look part of the flowery environment. The storyline is also not very organized and I need to include more scenes and shots to fully convey my narrative. I was told by my teachers to change all the backgrounds for the second cut because i didn't use my own images and the Colidescope background is not mine either which is considered copyright. I will have to make the caleidoscope effect in the next cut. I also will sync the music to the shots cut on the beat and have the movements of the butterflies go with the flow of the song. I want to include more scenes with the bees and create zoom-ins in some flying shots to make the camera and shots look different rather than stationary to make the video more engaging. I also plan to add more dancing scenes and a scene in a life-size environment after the spiral scene. Overall I think there is a lot to improve on with this video but as of now, I like how it is turning out.

Second Cut

Self Feedback:

I am really happy with how this video turned out, my vision came across exactly how I wanted. The video itself has a 70's aesthetic as the green screen is not perfect and some of the effects are simple just like in the 70's. For the first cut I also really enjoyed the costumes, I think it make them look like butterflies due to the colorpatching and the different types of patterns and layers. My second cut will have better costumes and I will be including hats and some clothing to cover amys legs and chest to better appropriate for 10-14 year olds. I really liked the sunflowers lipsyncing so I hope I can include more of those scene in my second cut to give a viarity of shots or visuals because at the moment I do think some scenes are very similar and it would be good to have something else to cut to. The animation Could be a little bit smoother but I like the roughness of it because it fits with the 80's "trashy" aesthetic that I initially went for. I also will have to film outside for the final minute of my music video. I also would like to change the filters on the characters because capcut made them look a lot paler and desautrated them. I will adjust the vibrancy and tone of the actors and maybe adjust other filters. And I want to make the colidecope flower scene more engaging and interesting. I liked the use of different filter like blurr effects and overlaying clips together to create a trippy effect as the beatles are known for their psychedelic and trippy element.

Self Feedback:

As my first cut I am very happy with how this video turned out. It fits my age demographic and is fun to watch. The puppet scenes are very fun and have a bit of comedy in them as well as showing the connection between the two puppets and its clear that one is a human and the other is a teddy bear. I like the transitions between the real life scenes and the puppet scenes. Althouh i think it could be more seamless and i think i should make the puppets align more with the real people to create a match cut. I also think I should sync the mouth movements of the puppets better in my final cut because there are areas where the lyrics don't sync with the puppet properly or at all. I don't plan to refilm anything for this music video because ih have a lot of footage i haven't used and i could use in my final cut. I do think I should also add more scenes with the real character because this cut features a bit too much puppets and it gets a bit boring. But I also need to keep it simple because my target audience enjoys simpler music videos and the puppets are more entertaining to watch . I also plan to change the filter of the puppets and create a vintage tv effect to further differentiate the different scenes.
